Have Yourself A Very Vegan Christmas

How to celebrate the festive season as a vegan.

It is reported that more than half a million people this year embraced veganism by adopting the plant- based diet. Plus, with retailers offering the largest selection of vegan foods ever, there has never been an easier time to try it.

However, Christmas can be a very difficult time for vegans. Supermarkets bombard consumers with images of roast turkeys and pigs in blankets. Simon Bandy of Veganicity, offers his top tips on surviving the festive period.

Prepare to be questioned

Aunty Joan, who you haven’t seen since last year, will most definitely ask why you turned vegan. Try to keep your answer short and sweet or you’ll be in for a lecture on why we have canine teeth. Try to move the conversation on unless they are genuinely interested.

Resist temptation

The festive season brings an abundance of tempting foods like chocolate and cheese.  If you are visiting family and friends be prepared to be offered non-vegan foods so pack your own nibbles and snacks and let people try them.  They will soon realise that being vegan doesn’t mean you’re missing out on anything.

Hostess with the mostess

If you worry about inconveniencing people or being unsure what you will and won’t be able to eat at someone else’s house, then why not consider hosting lunch at your home? You can create a host of interesting vegan dishes and even serve Tofurky.  Who knows, you may convert some people to try Veganuary

Top of the tipples

Believe it or not there are a host of household name alcoholic beverages that are suitable for vegans. From whiskeys to wines, and cognac to champagnes there will be something suitable for everyone in the drinks cabinet. Gracious gifts

It’s sometimes very hard to wear a smile when receiving a gift you don’t like, but it’s even difficult being a vegan and receiving an animal product.
