10 minute make: DIY Planters

Upcycle your old tin cans to give your succulents a new home

There’s something calming about being surrounded by green, and even if you’re limited to space, no home is complete without a couple of succulents. These gorgeous upcycled tin can DIY planters from Pillar Box Blue take just ten minutes to make, and are a great way to repurpose old tin cans, and bring a touch of glamour to your home.

You will need

  • Tin cans
  • Spray paint – look for latex-based spray paints, like Krylon, which have reduced VOC-emissions.
  • Hammer

How to make your DIY planters

1.  Begin by crushing your tin cans in their middles with a hammer – rotating them as you go. Whilst it might be fun to take out your frustrations on a tin can, don’t get too carried away, you want them to be useable.

2.  Once you are happy with the way they look, simply spray the cans with the paint.

3.  When dry, your DIY planters are ready for your succulents. To help with drainage, add a layer of gravel to the cans before adding compost and plants.
