To feel grounded is something we have all felt without properly realising it – Rebecca Taylor explains more.Remember the last time you felt ‘at home’, ‘comforted’ or ‘settled’ and in tune with your body. That is what being grounded feels like. Feel grounded in scientific terms can basically mean two things;
- Feeling connected with your body/ and or the earth
- Being fully in the present
There are many reasons why feeling grounded is so important for us as well as there being quite a few ways we can tune into our body and the earth to feel more grounded, which I will share very shortly. But firstly, let’s talk about why being grounded is so beneficial for our mind and body. Feeling in tune means feeling every sensation in your body and mind whilst just letting it be. It means being in the moment and just experiencing the world as it is rather than through past memories or a filter. You are living your life with intent and purpose rather than just passively watching your life go by. You are owning your feelings, emotions and body by just being in the moment and giving yourself the opportunity to express yourself and blossom.
Being grounded will also help you to:
- Quiet and clear your mind
- Calm and balance your emotions
- Recharge your energy
Grounding exercises will not only help your mental and emotional wellbeing but also your physical performance. To feel grounded feels like the nicest thing on earth. As if you are floating between the clouds and you are free. You are in the present so much that you do not worry about sensation in your body and mind whilst just letting it be. Whilst being present, it is also the most calming feeling in the world.
When we do not feel very well grounded, all sorts of problems can arise such as lack of sleep, anxiety, poor concentration, feeling easily deceived by others, feeling fatigued and generally feeling so ‘bleh’ about life. And let’s be honest, that is not a great feeling.
So how can we change that? How can we engage in feeling more grounded?
Many of the grounding exercises and techniques are so simple and easy to do and usually don’t take up too much of your time either. You also do not need any special equipment to do any of these exercises. Just yourself and a calming environment; wherever you may choose that to be.
- Follow your breath
This exercise is one of the simplest, quickest and most efficient techniques to do because you can literally do it anywhere, at any time.
All you have to do is;
‘Close your eyes and as you inhale feel the air going through your lungs. On the exhale, follow the air going back out through your lungs exiting your nose or mouth’. Try not to think of anything else except your breath and keep doing this for a total time of 1 minute.
- Take a cold shower
This technique has many health benefits which have been shown to increase immunity, reduce fat and brighten your mood. But most importantly, feeling more in touch with your body. If you are not convinced you’ll survive a cold shower, you can always put on your normal temperature but 30 seconds before finishing, turn the water temperature down.
- Mindful walking
Simply walk in nature and stay in the present. No phones or technology, no music or podcasts. Just you and the environment. This can be as short as 10 -20 minutes and you will be reaping the benefits.
There are two types of visualisation you can do. The first one is just traditional mindful visualisation. And the second type is called earth visualisation.
The traditional mindful visualisation is where you are seated in a comfortable place, close your eyes and imagine a calming place. This could be the waves and the ocean, a forest, space, the sun, a desert etc. For 2-5 minutes just sit and imagine how peaceful the place is and how you would feel being there right now.
Secondly, earth visualisation is where you feel the ground beneath you and center yourself with the earth. You begin to focus on your heart and as if energy is entering your heart. Now imagine a source of light, heat or whatever comes to mind. Imagine this energy going to your heart so you start to feel the earth’s core. Start to feel the connection between the earth and your heart. Do this for 2- 5 minutes.
