As a furniture designer and restorer, Polly Waite escaped the big smoke of London to pursue her dream of setting up a studio by the sea in Falmouth, Cornwall. With a background in design and a family history of antiques, Polly went on to study at the Traditional Upholstery Workshop. Since her move, she has hosted workshops to share her knowledge and help restore items of furniture. This creative project of reworking old items is Polly’s way of doing her bit for the planet by pushing back against the mass throwaway culture. Not only a friend of the Earth, she’s also a friend of her community, as she teaches her courses for free at a local woman’s charity and also offers her studio space for free to local craft community projects and groups.
And we’re giving one lucky Be Kind reader the chance to win a place on Polly’s ‘Make A Footstool’ course, which is a great introduction to upholstery. Held over a weekend, you’ll get to make a footstool from scratch, starting with just the bare frame and using only traditional materials and techniques. For more information, visit polliander.com
